Making every minute matter: TGRC marks Mandela Day by bringing warmth to those who need it most

Press Releases

In honour of Mandela Day, The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) reaffirmed its commitment to creating stronger, more resilient communities by supporting the Fountain of Love Centre, a local organisation dedicated to caring for vulnerable individuals and families.

As part of this year’s Mandela Day initiative, TGRC donated blankets and essential groceries to the Fountain of Love Centre, bringing warmth, nourishment and hope to vulnerable children, families and individuals during one of the coldest times of the year.

Observed annually on 18 July, Mandela Day serves as a reminder that meaningful change often starts with small acts of kindness. While individuals are encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes to serving others, organisations also have an opportunity to create lasting impact by supporting the communities around them.

Recognising the important role community organisations play in supporting South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens, TGRC selected the Fountain of Love Centre as the beneficiary of its Mandela Day initiative. For more than two decades, the centre has provided care and support to orphaned and vulnerable children, child-headed households, elderly residents and people living with disabilities through a range of feeding and community outreach programmes. With winter placing additional pressure on many of the families and individuals it serves, TGRC chose to donate blankets and groceries to help address some of the centre’s most immediate needs, providing warmth, nourishment and comfort where it is needed most.

“Mandela Day reminds us that creating meaningful change doesn’t always require grand gestures—it starts with showing up, caring for one another and taking action where it matters most,” says Shabeer Jhetam, CEO of TGRC. “While our purpose is to build a more sustainable future through glass recycling, we also recognise that sustainability is ultimately about people. Strong communities are built through partnership, compassion and shared responsibility. We were honoured to support the Fountain of Love Centre and hope our contribution not only brought comfort to the families they serve, but also inspires others to continue making a positive difference in their own communities.”

The donation will support individuals and families who rely on the centre’s services during winter, helping ease some of the challenges many continue to face.

For TGRC, the initiative reflects a broader commitment to creating positive impact, both through strengthening South Africa’s glass recycling ecosystem and by supporting the people and communities that form part of it.

By supporting the Fountain of Love Centre, TGRC hopes to inspire more businesses and individuals to recognise that when communities come together, even a single act of kindness can have a lasting impact. Ends

The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) consists of a team dedicated to increasing glass recycling in South Africa. We are passionate about ensuring every South African realises the value of recycling glass and actively embraces this practice.

We strive to educate, enable, encourage and inspire individuals to separate their glass for recycling, but do not physically collect or recycle the glass. Our focus extends beyond consumers and communities, but also on trade, industry and corporate South Africa. We also aim to uplift impoverished communities by creating income generating opportunities and skills development in the recycling sector. TGRC is funded by our committed members who manufacture glass or package their products in glass. We believe in the infinite potential of glass to make a real and positive contribution to society.
