Despite Efforts, Province Lags Behind in Glass Collection
Through the magic of recycling, Gauteng schools participated in The Glass Recycling Company’s (TGRC) 2023 Annual Schools Competition. However, amidst their valiant efforts, the province finds itself trailing behind in school-based glass collection compared to other regions, highlighting the need for increased participation and commitment to recycling initiatives.
In the pursuit of promoting recycling awareness and sustainability, TGRC’s Annual Schools Competition plays a crucial role in fostering a positive recycling culture within communities nationwide. Nationally, the weight of the glass collected throughout the competition is equivalent to nearly 300 cars!
Gauteng’s top three recycling schools showcased their dedication to the cause, yet the province’s overall performance fell short.
- Gereformeerde Skool Dirk Postma led the recycling charge with a collection of 11,419 kilograms of glass, earning the top spot in Gauteng and a prize of R 30,000.00.
- Kiddies Academy Lynnwood followed suit with 9,899 kilograms of glass collected, securing the second position and winning a prize of R 20,000.00.
- St. Paulus Pre-and Primary School contributed 9,749 kilograms of glass to the effort, earning them a prize of R 10,000.00.
Despite the commendable efforts of these schools, the combined glass collection of 31,067 kilograms for the top three schools in Gauteng pales in comparison to the remarkable achievements witnessed in other provinces, particularly the Eastern Cape’s top three school who collected 88, 867 kilograms – two thirds more glass than Gauteng’s top three schools. The top three in Gauteng’s glass in weight equated to about 22 cars, while the Eastern Cape’s was equal to a sizeable parking lot of 60 vehicles!
Shabeer Jhetam, CEO at The Glass Recycling Company, emphasised the importance of collective action in recycling: “While we commend the dedication of Gauteng schools, their performance underscores the need for greater commitment to recycling efforts. Through initiatives like the Annual Schools Competition, we aim to inspire communities to embrace recycling as a fundamental part of their daily lives.”
