Now’s the Season to Work Hard for Money for Glass!

Press Releases

The festive season is here, and with it comes plenty of opportunities to turn empty glass bottles and jars into extra cash. Whether it’s at taverns, shebeens, restaurants, or community centres, celebrations mean piles of glass ready for recycling. And now’s your chance to make the most of it!

Through TGRC and similar platforms, you can locate buy-back centres in your area where glass can be sold by the kilogram. Every piece of glass makes a difference, so start collecting today!

How to Collect and Sell Glass

  1. Find Sources:
Speak to local taverns, shebeens, restaurants, and neighbours to collect their empty bottles. Many are happy to have someone take care of the clutter for them.
  2. Whole or Broken Glass:
You can sell whole, unbroken glass containers, or you can break the glass into cullet (crushed glass ready to be recycled).
  3. What is Cullet?
Cullet is crushed glass with particles larger than 40mm (about the size of two R5 coins). Here’s how to prepare and store it:
  1. Use the bags or drums
  2. Do not sort by colour – just pack all glass together.
  3. Store the bags or drums in an easily accessible area for truck collection.
  4. Maximise Your Efforts:
Make sure to fill the bags or drums completely before handing them in – the fuller they are, the more you’ll earn!

Safety First

Glass can be dangerous, especially when broken, so always handle it with care. TGRC provides gloves and goggles to help you work safely. Here are some additional tips:

  • Wear Gloves: Protect your hands when handling and breaking glass.
  • Use Safety Goggles: Shield your eyes from shards when breaking glass.
  • Wear Sturdy Shoes: Thick-soled shoes will protect your feet from sharp pieces.

By following these steps and using the safety gear, you can work confidently and stay safe.

Where to Sell Your Glass

Take your packed bags or drums to your nearest buy-back centre. These centres pay for glassby weight, and the more you collect, the more you’ll earn. You can use Money4Glass to locate the closest centre and learn more about the recycling process.

Don’t Waste the Festive Season

The festive season is the busiest time of the year for celebrations, and that means more glass than usual. Start today by talking to your community, collecting glass, and preparing it for recycling. With TGRC’s support, you’ve got everything you need to make a difference – and make some extra cash.

About TGRC:
The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) consists of a team dedicated to increasing glass recycling in South Africa. We are passionate about ensuring every South African realises the value of recycling glass and actively embraces this practice.

We strive to educate, enable, encourage and inspire individuals to separate their glass for recycling, but do not physically collect or recycle the glass. Our focus extends beyond consumers and communities, but also on trade, industry and corporate South Africa. We also aim to uplift impoverished communities by creating income generating opportunities and skills development in the recycling sector. TGRC is funded by our committed members who manufacture glass or package their products in glass. We believe in the infinite potential of glass to make a real and positive contribution to society.
